During the Election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States. The election was very split between Northern and Southern Democrats in regards to slavery because the people knew that Lincoln would work toward abolishing it as a northerner. Once Lincoln became president, seven southern states decided to leave and form the Confederate States of America. This act became a chain in the events that led up to the Civil War.
