1 Jan 1946 Jahr - Viola Desmond Raised Awareness of Canadian Segregation

Beschreibung:

Viola Desmond was both a sucsessful businesswoman and a teacher in training, living in a small black community in Nova Scotia. In 1946, after Desmond developed car trouble, she decided to go to movies while repairs were being made. She bought a ticket, entered the theatre and took a seat, unaware that the part of the theatre she sat at was reserved for white customers. The theatre staff demanded she move herself to the African Canadian section of the theatre but she refused to move as the seat she was in had a better view of the movie. The police were called quickly following the argument and she was immediately dragged out, injuring her hip. Desmond was charged and held overnight in jail, though was never advised of her rights.

Viola Desmond's experience helped to inspire the public's opinion both locally and internationally, and her courage and heroism helped raise awareness about the reality of Canadian segregation.

Though she was unsuccessful in fighting the false charges in court, she nevertheless became an important symbol of the struggle for civil rights among Canadian minorities.
