The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments are nicknamed the Civil War amendments because they were written and passed in the years after the civil war. The 13th amendment specifies that all people in America are free, regardless of race. The 14th amendment guarantees that all people born in the United States of people that have passed citizenship test and citizens of the United States and therefore protected by the Constitution. The 15th amendment guarantees the right to vote for all citizens of the United States. These amendments abolished slavery and gave former slaves the right to vote and they were a major step for equality across America.
