Blues often used vocals with acoustic guitar, piano harmonica and some backing vocals. This style of music stemmed from African american folk music which is apparent through the use of a harmonica.
Blues used small ensembles as it was focused on the hardships of slavery so too many instruments would take away from the impact of the lyrics
it was hard for this music to become widespread as race music wasn't marketed to the white audience as segregation was still big thing
