During the start of the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress decided that the colonies needed to officially declare their independence from Britain. The Declaration of Independence emerged. The Declaration of Independence is a statement declaring that the thirteen American colonies constituted a free and independent state from Britain. It consists of two parts: a preamble justifying the revolution on the basis of natural rights and a list of reasons accusing King George III of tyranny and therefore justifying revolt. The Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence on July 2, 1776.
