The first Congressional tariff that protected US manufacturing industries from international competition. It was the only tariff the South supported in the "Tariff War" from 1816 to 1846. As a protective measure, the tariff legislation. It placed a tax of 25% on textiles for three years, at which time it would drop to 20%. Iron, leather, hats, writing paper and cabinet ware were taxed at 30%, while sugar was taxed at 3¢/lb.
