Along with immigration tension there was also slavery and sectional balance tension. Missouri applied for statehood as a slave state which broke the previous sectional bounds on slavery. As a compromise for making Missouri a slave state Maine became a free state. The Tallmadge Amendment stated that no slaves could be brought into Missouri. The Missouri Compromise all states that slavery was forbidden in states above the southern border of Missouri. Southern slave owners felt threatened by all the restrictions place on slavery.
