75% of the fastest growing occupations now require STEM skills and all require ICT skills. In this changing environment, education has never been more important in ensuring students have the skill set needed to succeed. Where the school curriculum once focused on providing students with basic facts, laws, and theories, with a small percentage going on to be scientists or engineers, it is now necessary for all students to be able to find solutions to complex social and environmental problems. This will require students to develop higher-order thinking skills, social intelligence, the ability to work with diverse groups of people and a commitment to lifelong learning. Australia’s National School Curriculum is now shifting to try and adapt to these changing needs and give students the skills they will need to succeed in the future.
