With the expansion of the pastoral industry Australia in the 1830s, the value of education for young Australian citizens was more widely recognized as shown by the growth of schools. Many were modeled on English grammar schools which required a particular type of teacher who held a teaching qualification. As a result, a demand arose for the establishment of teacher training programs to supply teachers for schools financially supported by the new social elite in Australia.
