During the 1800s, new religions became more prevent in America. Joseph Smith believed he was chosen by God to have a revelation so in 1830, he wrote a book called The Book of Mormon and he told the story of an ancient civilization that moved west and was then visited by Jesus after his resurrection. His beliefs evolved into a religion that practiced hard work, patriarchal dominance, and a church-based society. The faith encouraged polygamy, which sent Joseph Smith to jail, where he then died. A few years later, Brigham Young, a disciple of Smith, continued Smith’s faith and directed the Mormon followers to what is now Utah. Today, there are still many Mormon communities in the West.
