6 Jan 1813 Jahr - Lord Selkirk Engages Peter Fidler to Survey the Red River Settlement
Beschreibung:
Peter Fidler was a British surveyor, map-maker, fur trader and explorer. He had a long career in the employment of the H.B.C. Fidler surveyed 116,000 square miles and lays out 100 acre lots. The original farms faced the river with a narrow frontage and go back for two miles. Each settler was also was given rights to timber across the river to build their farms. This river-lot system allows settlers to be close to their neighbours and gives them access to the river and to a share of the fertile land.
The Métis, who previously developed their own settlements, are concerned about being displaced as squatters.
