on this day Russian born Yuri Gagarin became the first man to fly in space. his flight lasted for 108 minuets and over one full orbit. the flight was controlled from the ground so you could say that Yuri rode Vostok 1 into space. Vostok 1 was propelled by a Sapwood SS-6 and weighed 10416.84 pounds.
