6 Aug 1975 Jahr - Voting Rights Act of 1975

Beschreibung:

1. What is it?
The Voting Rights Act of 1975 is an amendment to the Voting Rights Act of 1970. One provision made was that voting rights were given to groups in the US that had not been protected by the act before. This included Hispanics, Asian Americans, Native Alaskans, and Native Americans. Congress also created bilingual election requirements for election officials.

2. When did it happen?
August 6th, 1975

3. Who was involved?
- Gerald Ford- his administration wanted to improve relations with African Americans, so he wanted to extend rather than weaken the act.

4. Where did it happen?
Washington DC

5. One major cause
The Voting Rights Act was once again set to expire, and Congress felt it was necessary to continue the law in order to fight racial discrimination in voting. Therefore, creating another amendment was less argumentative than in 1970. Nevertheless, Congress had changes they wanted to make to the act.

6. One major effect
The Voting Rights Act was extended for another seven years. Congress chose seven years instead of the usual five so that the next amendment would not occur during the 1980 reapportionment proceedings.
