WWI began on July 28, 1914. The main cause for World War 1 was the assassination of the Archduke, Franz Ferdinand, of Austria and his wife Sophie. Before WWI was triggered, a number of defence alliances existed between the major European countries. The United States was not in WWI from the start. In 1917, Germany, determined to win its war of attrition against the Allies, announced the resumption of unrestricted warfare in war-zone waters. Just over three days later, the United States stopped all diplomatic relations with Germany, and just a couple hours after that the American ship, Housatonic was sunk by a German U-boat.
