It was an act signed by LBJ in DC that banned different voter registration standards for blacks and whites and that there is equal employment. The main cause was because Kennedy felt pressure to act due to Birmingham and other violent protests. He was killed so LBJ did it instead. The main effect was that it banned segregation in public places. It was one of the first main pieces of legislation in the civil rights movement.
