After muhammad's death islam did not know what to do about a successor and this caused many arguments. Some believed that the successor should be family while others believed that the successor should be chosen of best fit.

This caused a split of the Islam people the Sunni and the Shiites. This is important because the Umayyad empire is the first great muslim caliph rule.
