The scopes trial started when science teacher John Scopes was prosecuted for teaching evolution in a Tennessee public school. Darwin's theory of evolution was a controversial concept at the time and it was illegal to discuss or teach it in Tennessee. Scopes was found guilty and fined 100 dollars.
