After some efforts at reconciliation, Leo IX sent the pugnacious Humbert to Michael Cerularius at Constantinople to re-assert Roman primacy. Due in part to Humbert’s manner of diplomacy, the result was double excommunications and a schism between East and West that has still not been repaired.
