The Mandate of Heaven is the idea that there could be only one legitimate ruler of China at a time, and that this ruler had the blessing of the gods. This is important because the Zhou Dynasty was able to take over the Shang Dynasty with the belief of this, but later other dynasties are able to use the Mandate of Heaven to overthrow the previous dynasty.
