26 Nov 1854 Jahr - 1854 Cholera, Jon Snow, and the Broad Street in London

Beschreibung:

A few years before the height of the River Thames' pollution, a baby incidentally set off an epidemic. Cholera, a disease that affects the intestinal tract and causes what is called "rice water stools" (which contains pieces of the intestines) as well as nausea, vomitting, cramps, and even shock, is caused by the bacteria Vibrio cholorae; it is passed through contaminated food or water and is passed through the fecal-oral route. In 1854 a baby got cholera and her mother washed her diapers to try to cope with the situation; the runoff waste though, containing the bacteria then contaminated the nearby Broad Street Pump water source, causing 60% of those who used that pump to get their water to come down with cholera. John Snow, a British doctor, noticed a possible connection and tried to get the pump turned off to try and prevent more infections; though he did get them to take off the handle, no one really believed him that the cause of the ourbreak was contaminated water, preferring the miasma or bad air idea.
