At some point in May of 1879, Charles Carpenter organized the first "Boomers", a group of people who felt the unassigned lands in Oklahoma Territory were attractive and moved in on the lands to try and convince Congress to open them up for settlers. Carpenter gathered them in Independence, a small town just across the Kansas border, for the lure of the merchants there drew him in. After the would-be homesteaders bought from the merchants, Carpenter announced he would lead them to the "promised land."
