Taylor led the main push militarily, fighting across the Rio Grande and into Mexico. He reached Buena Vista, where, on February 22, 1847, twenty thousand troops under Santa Anna attacked Taylor’s five thousand, eventually losing, making Taylor the “Hero of Buena Vista.”
