5 Sept 1845 Jahr - Irish Immigration
Beschreibung:
(Irish potato famine started in September 1845 and didn't end until 1852.)
Description: During the Irish potato famine, 1 million Irish fled to America. Coffin ships carried Irish people on a 6 week ocean crossing, where 1000s died of typhus, dysentery, and malnutrition. Tenements were the housing options for Irish in America. They were often filthy, poorly ventilated, infected with disease, and located in high crime areas.
Causes: The potato famine in Ireland caused this mass migration into America.
Historical Impact: Not all Americans welcomed the newcomers into the country; a lot of issues came to be because of the immigration. People did not want to compete with the Irish for American jobs in the economy and government. From this issue, the Know-Nothing Party was created; the party pledged to never vote for foreign-born or Catholic candidates
