Description: Many people, especially women became concerned with the amount of alcohol consumption in America. People began to put movements together concerning the issue. In 1833, they created the American Society for the Promotion of Temperance.
Cause: Alcohol became very prevalent in American life, and led to alcoholism. People began to realize the severity of the issue, especially among soldiers. People argued that “soldiers of the cross” should lead blameless lives.
Historical Impact: While alcohol obviously never became illegal, the temperance movements raised awareness of the issue. It helped gain more laws in favor of safer drinking, and encouraged many that drinking was not a good thing.
