Elizabeth I first brought religious tolerance to England in 1558. This lead to them being attacked more frequently because it was believed allowing more than one religion in a country was allowing heretics. If you had heretics then it was thought that God wasn't on that countries side so attacking a tolerant nation would be a piece of cake.
