3 März 1820 Jahr - Missouri Compromise

Beschreibung:

The Compromise of 1820, or Missouri Compromise, proposed a way to decide if new states could or could not practice slavery. The compromise created by Henry Clay consisted of three main points: Maine be admitted as a free state, Missouri be admitted as a slave state, and any other state admitted above the 36° 30' line to be a free state, and any state admitted below the line to be a slave state.

The Missouri Compromise is significant because it was one of the first events that introduced the idea of sectionalism. People were becoming more loyal to their region per se rather than their whole country. Even though the Missouri Compromise provided a solution to an issue, it resulted in new tensions between the North and the South.

"A geographical line, coinciding with a marked principle, moral and political, once conceived and held up to the angry passions of men, will never be obliterated; and every new irritation will mark it deeper and deeper."
-Thomas Jefferson
