Changes and amendments were made to the constitution of 1979 after Khomeini's death, most of which reduced the cleric's power. These amendments increased the size of the Assembly of Religious Experts, and helped them determine whether their Supreme Leader was capable of carrying out his duties. Former President Khamenei took over the Supreme Leader role and is still Supreme Leader to this day.
