Patriots capture Hessian detachment at Trenton leaving them victorious. The Patriots broke one of the rules of traditional European wars. The Patriots surprise attacked the Hessians during the winter. They believed that the Patriots were weak, which they were, they were outnumbered and didn't have very many resources. This surprise attach was a huge risk. They took that risk and they succeded in what thye did.
