After Cleopatra and Antony killed themselves, Octavian then became the sole ruler. Over the next few years he gained near;y limitless power. He took the title princeps, or first citizen. In 27 BC Octavian announced that he was going to be giving his power to the Senate but, in reality, he kept all of his power. The Senate gave him a new name - Augustus to mark the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire.
