Martin Luther was the single most impactful religious character in the 16th century, or maybe in the entire millennium. He started as a devout Catholic monk, until he began to read and ponder the works of Paul and the New Testament where he brought out a new idea of Sola Fide (Faith Alone) that birthed more criticisms of the Catholic church and manifested itself in sermons and homilies, later with written works, until he became such an international figure that the entire Protestant Reformation was born of him. He is more influential than any other religious figure at the time, such as John Calvin, because he was the very first to spurn the Catholic excommunication, be branded a heretic, and still have his works, teachings, and ideas create a movement that is around today, which is something that Calvin cannot claim (even though his denomination of Christianity still exists).
