This event was the beginning of the ‘opening of the Atlantic’ and a new continent that Europeans would eventually subjugate. For the immediate future, it provided conquest for Spain and Portugal, as well as gold and opportunities for religious conversions. This event is more notable than Vasco de Gama rounding Africa in 1498 the territory that de Gama ‘discovered’ would never become distinctly western (unlike America), even if it was subjugated by western rule.
