Ulysses S. Grant was entrusted with command of all U.S. armies in 1864, and relentlessly pursued the enemy during the Civil War. In 1869, at age 46, Grant became the youngest president theretofore. Paved the way for Union General William Tecumseh Sherman's Atlanta campaign and march to Savannah, Georgia, in 1864 by winning battles that forced Confederates to retreat to Georgia.
