The US embassy in Teheran went under attack by Iranian militant students on November 4, 1979. They were mad because the US government allowed ousted shah of Iran to travel to New York to seek medical treatment. The Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran’s political and religious leader, took over the hostage situation. Two weeks into the hostage situation they started releasing all non American citizens, females, and minority Americans. This left 52 Americans being held captive. The US government under Jimmy Carter tried to bargain with the terrorists but they wouldn’t budge. They kept the Americans held hostage for 444 days until on January 20, 1981 Ronald Reagan was elected as the 40th president of the United States.
