22 Jun 1807 Jahr - Chesapeake-Leopard Affair
Beschreibung:
A large British warship called the HMS Leopard demanded to board a smaller U.S. vessel called the USS Chesapeake with the goal of impressing the crew members. When the USS Chesapeake refused, the warship opened fire, which led to multiple casualties. This event was important because it angered Americans and increased their nationalistic feelings of hatred toward Britain. Although there were many divides in America, this united people under one cause, which would strengthen the nation as a whole. Also, it led to calls for a stronger navy, which would become one of the defining characteristics of America.
