America declares war on Great Britain due to British naval blockades against American ships trading with France. Due to the ongoing fight against Napoleon Britain stayed on the defensive for most of the war. America made several attempts to take parts of British Canada, but were defended. After capturing Lake Erie and at the Battle of the Thames defeated Tecumseh's Confederacy, securing a primary war goal. With a final battle resulting in a draw the American invasion of Canada ceases. The British Royal Navy blockaded the East Coast, halting trade and raiding coastal cities. One of these raids resulted in the burning of Washington DC, the American capital. But the British invasion was halted at Baltimore and pushed back. With Napoleon abdicating the French blockade ended and the English reinforced the American naval blockade, bringing the American government to near bankruptcy. Peace talks opened in Britain and a treaty was signed. News of the peace did not reach America very fast and one final British attempt at invasion was launched and stopped at New Orleans.
