On March 6, 1857, Dred Scott, a Virginia slave, tried to sue in court for his freedom. It went to the Supreme Court level before it was ruled that he had no rights. Slaves were property, and therefore had no freedoms. This case challenged pro-slavery activists and enraged slaves and anti-slavery activists.
