1 Jan 2009 Jahr - FDA begins to hold public meetings to discuss abuse. With help, the FDA launches two initiatives. They helped ensure safe use and reduce preventable harm. FDA begins to work on educating the public on how to safely dispose of opioids. FDA partnered with U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to launch an initiative to help ensure the safe use of the opioid methadone. FDA launched the Safe Use Initiative to reduce preventable harm by medications, including opioids.
