During Napoleon's rule, Italy was united, but the Congress of Vienna decided to give most of Northern Italy to the Austrian Empire and split the rest among several monarchs. The Italians didn't like this so nationalist feelings grew in Italy. This eventually led to the Italians revolting and becoming united.
