An alliance was forged between the English colony of New York led by Governor Sir Edmund Andros and the Iroquois Confederacy. The Native Americans helped New Yorkers to remove the presence of opposing tribes around the area, as well as in attacks against the French and their Native American allies (the Wabanaki). In return, Andros recognized Iroquois authority over a large area of land expanding to the Ohio River.
