Up until this point in the war, magic hadn't been used much, as it was still being discovered as a language, built through extensive study. After the fire three hundred years prior, the works had finally built back to a point where magic was starting to be practical once more. The king called on the aid of mages for his tasks, finding them much more effective in virtually every matter.
