In Europe, the large number of people living in close quarters in dirty cities because of industrialization caused disease to become a widespread and serious threat to people’s lives. Through the research of Louis Pasteur, it was discovered that bacteria were the cause of disease. Pasteur further discovered that injecting weakened forms of disease-causing agents into a person could prevent them from developing that disease. In 1885, Pasteur successfully tested this theory on a boy bitten by a rabid dog and called his method vaccination. From Pasteur’s research, Doctor Joseph Lister concluded that killing the bacteria that causes disease using antiseptics would prevent infection, especially infections caused by surgery. Lister made using antiseptics to clean hands and surgical equipment before use a common practice, greatly reducing the number of infections people got post-surgery. Overall, the Health Reform Movement reduced the spread of disease in industrialized cities.
