USA drops an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, killing about 140000 people and wiping out 90% of the city. The purpose of the bombing was to force Japan to surrender, which it did later on. The Hiroshima bombing is most closely related to deterrence because the USA bombed Hiroshima with the purpose of preventing Japan from further participating in the war.
