When Proctor comes up before the tribunal, he is a broken man attempting to confess. The broken Proctor is asked if he has “conjured”, to which he simply says “I did not.” He is asked if he “has seen anyone with the devil”, and once again he says “I did not.” Soon they ask Proctor to sign his name and he refuses to sign his name since he has been banished for the last 3 months. He has been outcasted and only wishes one thing: that his name will be written on a sheet of paper of which is a lie. He yearns for a heroic death rather than a cowardly life. Soon Proctor and many others were hanged for witchcraft.
