During the French Wars of Religion, peace had been seemingly made through the marriage of Henry of Navarre to the sister of Charles IX. Many Huguenots and their leaders were in Paris for the wedding so Catherine de Medici ordered the assassination of all the leaders and a bloody massacre ensued.
