1 Jan 1835 Jahr - Canals
Beschreibung:
By this time, canals connected all of the major lakes and rivers east of the Mississippi (mostly in the Northeast). This new transportation technology contributes to the Market Revolution.
Effects of transportation improvements (including steam boats, roads, and railroads):
- cheaper food prices in the east (because of cheaper transportation costs)
- more immigrant settling in the west (because it's easier to move west)
- stronger economic ties between the west and the north east (and also cultural because the north east didn't like slavery and neither did the west)
- rapidly transformed western towns such as Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Chicago into major trading hubs
