The treaty signed to end the religious wars within the Holy Roman Empire. The accord allowed for each individual German Prince to choose the religion of the area he ruled. This caused Germany to remain fragmented both politically and religiously for some time, and would also allow for continued tensions between Catholics and Protestants.
