The battle was fought between the invading Ottoman Turks and the defending Hungarians. Due to poor logistics and planning, as well as an inferior army, the Hungarian army was utterly crushed, and their king, Louis II, was killed in battle. This sealed the end for Hungary as a political autonomous entity for some centuries, and only the northern third, Transylvanina managed to hold out against Turkish attacks.
