In 1271, when Marco was only 17, Pope Gregory X asked the Polos to take a trip to China. They crossed over the Mediterranean and Black Sea, and finally reached Xinjiang. They then continued along the Hexi Corridor and reached Shang-du in Inner Mongolia where Kublai Khan helped them.
