Malcom X's effprts at building the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU) and working with other civil rights leaders was tragically cut short.

On 21 February 1965, Malcom X was assassinated while giving a speech in the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem, leaving a legacy that both united and divided the Civil Rights Movement.

However, this legacy also brought significantly greater awareness to all of the United States of the grievances and frustrations of African Americans - in particular those outside the South, whose plight had largely been ignored by the national press and white civil leaders - as well as a sense of pride in African identity that has lasted for decades beyond his death.
