Beschreibung:
President Barack Obama said at the end of 2015 the his favorite song of 2015 was Kendrick Lamar's "How Much a Dolla Cost" (Fleischer, 2015)
The song is a story about Kendrick Lamar meeting God in the form of a homeless man, but his own greed keeping him from giving the man a single dollar. How would we treat other people if we knew they might be our savior? Consider the relationship between Kendrick Lamar's verse, and these two verses from the Bible:
"I looked at him and said, every nickel is mines to keep
He looked at me and said, know the truth, it'll set you free
You're lookin' at the Messiah, the son of Jehova, the higher power
The choir that spoke the word, the Holy Spirit, the nerve
Of Nazareth, and I'll tell you just how much a dollar cost
The price of having a spot in Heaven, embrace your loss, I am God" (Duckworth, 2015)
Proverbs 19:17
One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the LORD, And He will repay him for his good deed.
Proverbs 21:13
He who shuts his ear to the cry of the poor will also cry himself and not be answered.
It is clear that Kendrick agrees with the Biblical passages above which has led him to conclude that good deeds are rewarded, but ignoring those in need will lead to rejection from God. Kendrick displays in his next album, "DAMN." that he agrees that people are indeed in need of God just like the poor need money from the rich to survive. It is the ignorance towards God's commands that Kendrick believes have put him in a position of not being able to enter the kingdom of God. He is in agreement with Bob Marley that he must then "instigate the movement of God" through repentance (Emerson, 2006, p. 43).
